Restore the Strength and Integrity
of Your Smile with Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are customized restorations that can offer both cosmetic benefits and restore your oral health. Also known as caps, crowns are placed over the top of a tooth weakened by decay, chips, cracks, or other forms of damage. Dr. Shaun Bivens can design and place incredibly lifelike dental crowns to restore the integrity of your smile at our dental practice in Mt. Juliet, TN. We use advanced materials, such as zirconia and IPS e.max®, to provide you with the strongest and most aesthetic dental restorations available. At Bivens Dentistry, we also offer implant-supported crowns to replace missing teeth.

What Are Dental Crowns?

A crown is a fixed restoration which covers the entirety of a damaged tooth. This type of restoration provides strength and protection for a weakened tooth and can also improve the appearance, shape, and alignment of your smile. Dr. Bivens may recommend a dental crown for patients with structural or cosmetic concerns, such as:

  • Cracks, chips, or fractures
  • Severe decay or damage
  • Disproportionate or misshapen teeth
  • Bite misalignment
  • Erosion of chewing surfaces
  • Severe discoloration
  • Infection which requires root canal therapy

Dental crowns can also be used to restore a single missing tooth with a dental implant or secure a dental bridge, or incorporated into a full mouth reconstruction. It is important to have healthy gums before receiving a dental crown. Dr. Bivens can examine your oral health and recommend any preliminary procedures, such as periodontal treatment, to ensure the success of your restoration.

Traditional crowns encapsulate the entire tooth down to the gum line.

Receiving Your Dental Crown

At your first appointment, we will take a series of x-rays to examine the roots of your tooth and check for signs of infection. If the supporting structures are healthy and we determine a crown is the best solution for your needs, Dr. Bivens will prepare your tooth by shaping the chewing surfaces and sides. This process allows the crown to fit comfortably within your bite and not appear bulky.

In addition to traditional materials such as gold and porcelain, we also offer advanced crowns fabricated from zirconia and IPS e.max.

Next, we will take an impression of your tooth and send this information to our dental laboratory so they can fabricate your custom crown. We will place a temporary crown to protect your tooth while you wait for your permanent restoration. In general, crowns take about two weeks to fabricate. Once your permanent crown is ready, you can return to our office for placement. Dr. Bivens will remove the temporary restoration and bond the new crown in place using a specialized dental cement.

Durable, Aesthetic Materials

At Bivens Dentistry, we offer a range of materials for our crowns, allowing us to customize your treatment to fit your needs and budget. In addition to traditional materials such as gold and porcelain, we also offer advanced crowns fabricated from zirconia and IPS e.max. Both these materials are incredibly strong and able to mimic the natural reflective properties of tooth enamel. For some patients, we can also provide porcelain-fused-to-zirconia crowns.

Taking Care of Your Crown

With proper care, your dental crown can last 10 years or more. You can maintain your crown in the same way as your natural teeth by brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily. Visiting our office twice a year can allow us to monitor the integrity of your restoration as well as the underlying structures.
